My fav breakfast – Making my own mix

Last Christmas, I discovered in Cologne Mymuesli, a german brand of cereals which allows its customers to make their own muesli recipes, as healthy or decadent as they like. I was very happy with the pre-made blends I already tried : Apple cinnamon, mango, red berries. But as you can imagine, I ran out of it recently and couldn’t find a close match at a correct price in Brussels (unless I make it myself but not sure that I have the time or the willingness to do it…).

So I decided to place an order on Mymuesli.com with my own muesli recipe. What I like about this brand is that you can really be creative:

  1. Pick a base: Emmer flakes, Kamut flakes, Oats, PurPur Wheat Flakes, Rye flakes, barley flakes, spelt flakes, chocolate crunchies or puffs, honey granola, …

  2. Pick a refined base: Amaranth flakes or puffs, barley, Flax Seeds, chia seeds, spelt flakes, Quinoa, Sesame, whole wheat cornflakes, poppiseed,…

  3. Pick your nuts & seeds: Almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, coconut, hemp seeds, Macadamia nuts, pecan, …

  4. Pick your fruits: Apple, Apricot, Aronia berries, Bananas, blackcurrants, cranberries, dates, figs, goji berries, grapes, mango, papaya, plum, pineapple, physalis, …

  5. Any extra topping: Apple cinnamon, banana choco, choco spelt balls, corn crispers, dark chocolate, espresso beans, honey flakes, …

As you can see, the list of products is extensive and on top of being healthy, it is: lactose free, Bio, contains no GMO and the Palm oil comes from orangutan friendly farming. What more can we ask? I often thought about making my own granola or muesli but finding the ingredients I want at a good price is hard. With Mymuesli, you can experiment and know your tastes even better.

For my first custom order (1 box = 575gr), I decided to go for the following mix:

  • A base that contains no grains! (supposedly) It is made of chia seeds, fine buckwheat flakes and puffed amaranth

  • A refined base of Amaranth flakes and Quinoa

  • Pomegranate & Brazil nuts

  • Apple cinnamon crunch & dark chocolate

And here is the full list of ingredients, Mymuesli is quite transparent about what they use or add to your muesli. As such you know exactly what goes in your body:

buckwheat flakes, brazil nuts, chia seeds, cocoa mass, oat flakes, puffed amaranth, amaranth flakes, quinoa flakes, freeze-dried pomegranate seeds, raw cane sugar, wheat flakes, cane sugar, dried apple pieces, unhardened palm fat, cocoa butter, honey, cinnamon, sea salt

The creation of this mix was super easy and so was the ordering process. The follow-up is very clear and the preparation + shipping very quick. I must say Mymuesli is great at order handling :p

The price however is high but I expected as much from a company offering custom made orders with bio products. Does it justify the price? Here in Brussels, bio muesli can be expensive I find, add to that a bag of brazil nuts, bio chocolate chips, dry pomegranate and I don’t think you’ll be far from Mymuesli’s price. The key element of the price difference being the “Bio” label…I’ll check the prices for bio and non bio components of my recipe and we’ll see whether the price is high.

As you can see above, Mymuesli provides you with an approximate nutritive value of your mix. In my case, per 60gr I get 6.8gr of proteins, 34.6gr of carbohydrates but only 3.5g of sugar…Much less than in many other brands.

Note that the tube containing the muesli can also be reused to store pasta or anything else, it is very handy!

Now, I am going to empty this tube and see if I am still happy with the brand (enough nuts, fruits,…).
